Mesothelioma Survival Rate 2016

Mesothelioma Survival Rate

Mesothelioma survival rate refers to the percentage of survivors who live a year or more after diagnosis. About 55 percent of mesothelioma patients survive six months, and 30-40 percent survive longer than a year. Only about 9 percent survive five years or more.

“How Long Can I Live With Mesothelioma?”

This question is commonly asked by those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer caused by asbestos. Unfortunately, as with most diseases, there is no one answer to how long a mesothelioma patient will live.

Survival Rates for Mesothelioma Are Improving

The good news is that survival rates for mesothelioma patients are improving. A 2015 meta-study looked at 20 years worth of results from 1992 – 2012, and during that period the two major forms of mesothelioma (pleural and peritoneal) have both seen an improvement in survivorship.

According to the study, peritoneal mesothelioma survivorship has especially shown significant improvement, largely due to new forms of treatment, such as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

The Effect of Treatment on Survival

The type of treatment a mesothelioma patient receives can affect survival rates. Whether this is due to the treatment itself or to other factors (e.g., if the patient is too ill to undergo a more aggressive treatment) may not always be apparent. While there has been no single study showing survival rates based on treatment across all types of mesothelioma, separate studies have been done on the two most common forms of mesothelioma.

For pleural mesothelioma, patients who undergo a pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) or extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) – both of which are usually part of a multimodal treatment plan – generally have a much higher rate of survival than those who receive chemotherapy alone.
For peritoneal mesothelioma, patients who undergo cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with HIPEC have significantly higher rates of survival. When combined with systemic chemotherapy as an adjuvant treatment, the 5-year survival rate of patients who undergo CRS + HIPEC can be as high as 67%.

Other Survival Rate Factors

The survival rate for mesothelioma patients depend on a variety of factors. These include things such as the patient’s age, health, and the treatment they receive. Ever individual case is different, and one survival rate may not necessarily apply to a specific patient’s case.

Stage at Diagnosis

Mesothelioma staging can impact survival rate significantly. Patients diagnosed at an early stage (Stage I or Stage II) have a much higher survival rate than those diagnosed at a later stage (Stage III or Stage IV). For example, the 5-year survival rate for Stage 1 peritoneal mesothelioma patients is 87 percent, but only 29 percent for Stage IV.

Age of the Patient

Younger mesothelioma patients have higher rates of survival than older patients. This is due in part to the fact that older people in general have lower survival rates. In addition, with age comes a variety of health-related conditions that can make a mesothelioma diagnosis more deadly.

Sex

According to data provided by the National Cancer Institute’s SEER database, women have a higher 5-year survival rate (16%) than men (9.3%). It is not entirely clear why this is so, though some reasons may include that women are generally diagnosed at a younger age, they are more likely to get regular medical checkups, and they may be in better overall health.

Race

There is some evidence that African-Americans who have mesothelioma have a slightly longer 5-year survival rate than Caucasian mesothelioma patients. However, because Caucasians have a much higher incidence of mesothelioma, there may not be enough cases of African-Americans who have the disease to make a substantive determination.

Genetics

Several studies have shown that certain genetic factors can affect survival rates among patients. For example, mesothelioma patients who have certain mutations of BRCA1-associated protein-1 (BAP1) appear to have much better survival rates than other individuals who develop the disease, according to one study.

Improving Mesothelioma Survival Rate

Mesothelioma survival rates are steadily improving due to new treatments being developed. Survival rate statistics provide more information to patients about their prognosis.Estimating Mesothelioma Survival Time

Patients with mesothelioma are surviving longer than ever before. One key component of survival rates are the statistics that support them. These statistics help explain a patient’s prognosis and determine their outcome. They accomplish this by examining how long other patients with a similar diagnosis survive.

Underreported Factors Affecting Survival Rates

  • Mesothelioma Data Icon

    Current Survival Results

Survival rates don’t always reflect current data. Doctors examine the results of people treated in the past in order to provide patients with survival rates. These survival rates only offer a glimpse into the past, not the future.
  • Mesothelioma Treatment Icon

    New Treatment Options

Survival rates cannot account for new treatment options. In many cases these treatments were not available at the time the data was collected. Mesothelioma treatment options have been developing quickly through clinical trials in the past decade. Get connected to clinical trials for innovative treatments.
  • Mesothelioma Specialist Icon

    Misleading Statistics

Survival rates can be misleading because they include patients who didn’t receive treatment or were treated by general oncologists rather than mesothelioma specialists.

Patients and families should remember that all statistics (including survival rates) have a degree of error. While mesothelioma survival rates tend to be low, overall survival rates are constantly improving due to innovative treatment options.

Location

Doctors record survival rates at yearly intervals to provide a guideline for life expectancy. However, many patients live longer or shorter than these intervals. Mesothelioma survival rates based on location of the tumor may be misinterpreted since this disease can be easily mistaken for other types of cancer. If a patient is correctly diagnosed before the cancer reaches later stages, survival rates may not apply.
A study by the National Cancer Institute concluded the one-year survival rate for pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma patients is relatively even at about 40 percent.
However, following the second year after diagnosis, survival rates for pleural patients drop considerably (11 percent), while survival rates for peritoneal patients only experienced a small decrease (35 percent).
This suggests it is equally hard to detect pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma early enough to effectively treat the disease. These numbers also show treatment for a peritoneal patient is more effective than treatment for a pleural patient.
Due to the rarity of pericardial mesothelioma, there are no conclusive studies to show survival rates for these patients. It is only known that the majority of patients (90 percent) with pericardial mesothelioma were diagnosed after death.

Stage

Survival rates based on stage are particularly important for determining a prognosis. There is a strong correlation between mesothelioma stage and patient life span. Patients diagnosed at the early stages of mesothelioma (with less metastasis) have significantly longer survival rates.
At age 65 or older, survival rates of mesothelioma patients are 5 times better at stage 1 than at stage 4.
Mesothelioma is more often diagnosed in the later stages because of the lack of specific symptoms of mesothelioma. Survival rates at this stage are lower because the cancer is more advanced and more difficult to treat. However, there are numerous treatment options for patients at any stage. New, noninvasive treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation, are frequently being developed and improved in ongoing clinical trials.

Cell Type & Histology

Mesothelioma can develop as one of three histological cells types or variations: epithelioid, biphasic or sarcomatoid. Cell type is an important factor in survival rates. Generally, epithelioid mesothelioma has the best survival rate because it reacts better to treatment. Sarcomatoid has the poorest rate due to its ability to spread quickly.
There is a wide range of studies that show the survival rates based on the cell types of patients. Dr. David Sugarbaker completed a study in 1996 involving 120 mesothelioma patients, which illuminated how important cell type is to survival rates in patients undergoing multimodal therapy. It is important to keep in mind multimodal therapy is the most successful type of treatment for mesothelioma and other studies have varying survival rates. However, patients with an epithelioid cell type tend to do markedly better than other cell types.

Age and Gender

Age is an important factor in determining an individual patient’s prognosis. Survival rates for mesothelioma vary depending on the age of the patient during diagnosis. Younger patients tend to have higher survival rates. For example, patients who are diagnosed before the age of 65 live an average of three months longer than those diagnosed between the ages of 65 and 74. The overall health of a patient predicts how well they will respond to treatment.
Older patients do not necessarily have a poorer life expectancy.
Personal health plays a huge role in the life expectancy of all cancer patients. An older patient in good health may have a better life expectancy than a younger patient in poor health. Finding an experienced mesothelioma doctor is crucial to improving an older patient’s life expectancy.

Why Do Women Live Longer?

Gender is another factor that affects survival rates. The 5-year relative survival rate for women is more than double the rate for men. Recent data shows men have a 6.5 percent 5-year survival rate and women have a 15.4 percent rate. Routine health visits often lead to an earlier diagnosis and help account for a higher female survival rate. One study concluded that women visited the doctor nearly 20 percent more than men.
This data shows a significant difference in survival rates between men and women, but could be skewed based on occupational exposure. Men traditionally work jobs where factors related to mesothelioma, such as prolonged exposure to asbestos, are much higher than those seen by women.

Survival Rates After Surgical Treatment

Mesothelioma survival rates are higher among patients who had surgery to remove their tumor. This is because mesothelioma surgeries slows down the tumor’s ability to spread. During surgery blood vessels are also rerouted to prevent metastasis through the blood stream.
There are 3 surgeries that have greatly increased survival rates:
  • Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) – Pleural mesothelioma
  • Pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) – Pleural mesothelioma
  • Cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC – Peritoneal mesothelioma
Patients eligible for these surgeries are usually those who are in stage 1 or 2. However, late stage patients who apply for clinical trials may be eligible for surgical treatment.
Patients who have a combined treatment of surgery and other treatments, such as radiation or chemotherapy, experienced marked improvements in survival. The common survival times after one of these surgeries is typically double the survival time of patients who didn’t have surgery.

Beat the Odds - Improve Your Survival Rate

Survival rates are used to give patients an approximation of how long people with a similar diagnosis survived. They are based on a range of factors from tumor location to the patient’s age. Survival rates may give patients a clearer picture of their diagnosis so they can develop a treatment plan best suited for them.
“I knew I was a fighter and could handle whatever happened.” – Mesothelioma Survivor, Jodi Page
Many patients have a survival time different than survival rates initially indicate, sometimes regardless of the treatment received. With this in mind, patients should take survival rate statistics with a grain of salt and not be discouraged. All patients are unique, creating the possibility that these rates may not apply to them.
As such, survival rates are only a guideline and can be misinterpreted. Learn more about beating the odds in our free Mesothelioma Guide.

WiFi Hacking tutorial 2

Method 2 of 2: WEP Routers
1:Root a compatible device. Not every Android phone or tablet will be able to crack a WPS PIN. The device must have a Broadcom bcm4329 or bcm4330 wireless chipset, and must be rooted. The Cyanogen ROM will provide the best chance of success. Some of the known supported devices include:
  • Nexus 7
  • Galaxy S1/S2/S3/S4/S5
  • Galaxy y
  • Nexus One
  • Desire HD
  • Micromax A67
2
Download and install bcmon. This tool enables Monitor Mode on your Broadcom chipset, which is essential for being able to crack the PIN. The bcmon APK file is available for free from the bcmon page on the Google Code website.
  • To install an APK file, you will need to allow installation from unknown sources in your Security menu. Step 2 of this article goes into more detail.
3
Run bcmon. After installing the APK file, run the app. If prompted, install the firmware and tools. Tap the "Enable Monitor Mode" option. If the app crashes, open it and try again. If it fails for a third time, your device is most likely not supported.
  • Your device must be rooted in order to run bcmon.

4:Tap "Run bcmon terminal". This will launch a terminal similar to most Linux terminals.Type airodump-ng and tap the Enter button. AIrdump will load, and you will be taken to the command prompt again. Type airodump-ng wlan0 and tap the Enter button.
5:Identify the access point you want to crack. You will see a list of available access points. You must select am access point that is using WEP encryption.
6:Note the MAC address that appears. This is the MAC address for the router. Make sure that you have the right one if there are multiple routers listed. Jot this MAC address down.
  • Also note the Channel that the access point is broadcasting on.
7:Start scanning the channel. You will need to collect information from the access point for several hours before you can attempt to crack the password. Typeairodump-ng -c channel# --bssid MAC address -w output ath0 and tap Enter. Airodump will begin scanning. You can leave the device for a while as it scans for information. Be sure to plug it in if you are running low on battery.
  • Replace channel# with the channel number the access point is broadcasting on (e.g. 6).
  • Replace MAC address with the MAC address of the router (e.g 00:0a:95:9d:68:16)
  • Keep scanning until you reach at least 20,000-30,000 packets.
8:Crack the password. Once you have a suitable number of packets, you can start attempting to crack the password . Return to the terminal and type aircrack-ng output*.cap and tap Enter
9: Note the hexadecimal password when finished. After the cracking process is complete (which could take several hours), the message KEY FOUND! will appear, followed by the key in hexadecimal form. Make sure that "Probability" is 100% or the key will not work.[2]
  • When you enter the key, enter it without the ":". For example, if the key was 12:34:56:78:90, you would enter 1234567890.

4:Download and install Reaver
Reaver is a program developed to crack the WPS PIN in order to retrieve the WPA2 passphrase. The Reaver APK can be downloaded from the developers' thread on the XDA-developers forums.

5: Launch Reaver.
Tap the Reaver for Android icon in your App drawer. After confirming that you are not using it for illegal purposes, Reaver will scan for available access points. Tap the access point you want to crack to continue.
  • You may need to verify Monitor Mode before proceeding. If this is the case, bcmon will open again.
  • The access point you select must accept WPS authentication. Not all routers support this.
6:Verify your settings
In most cases you can leave the settings that appear at their default. Make sure that the "Automatic advanced settings" box is checked.

7:Start the cracking process.
Tap the "Start attack" button at the bottom of the Reaver Settings menu. The monitor will open and you will see the results of the ongoing crack displayed.
  • Cracking WPS can take anywhere from 2-10+ hours to complete, and it is not always successful.
